Install Sync Engine for Intercom from WordPress.org. Connect Intercom with OAuth or an Access Token. Use the method your Intercom admin already allows. Confirm Connected with the test connection, then choose which users, roles, WordPress events, and WooCommerce store events to sync. Messenger and identity verification are optional.
This is data sync setup. It is not the same as pasting Intercom’s chat snippet alone. See Messenger vs data sync.
What you’ll need before you start
- WordPress admin access
- Intercom permission to authorize the app (OAuth) or create Access Tokens
- WooCommerce only if you plan store sync (HPOS compatible)
- A staging site if you want to place a test order before production
Connect Intercom step by step
Install and activate from WordPress.org. You’ll find settings for connection, user sync, events, tags, and optional Messenger.
Open Connection settings and choose one path:
- OAuth. Authorize Sync Engine for Intercom in Intercom from the plugin. Use this when your team prefers signing in over pasting a token.
- Access Token. Create a token in Intercom settings, then paste the token plus your workspace/app ID (needed for the token path only). Follow current Intercom help for where tokens live in your workspace.
Optionally turn on identity verification in settings if you plan to prove logged-in chatters in Messenger. Credentials stay on your WordPress site; data goes WordPress → Intercom.
Pick the method your Intercom admin already allows. You do not need both.
Use test connection. Status should read Connected (or Not Connected if something is wrong). Connected means the plugin can reach Intercom. Run bulk sync when you want existing users in Intercom too.
WordPress users & roles
Enable user sync for the fields you need: email, name, phone, avatar, signup date, and last activity. Roles become tags on the Intercom contact. Tag automation removes old role tags when someone’s role changes.
WordPress events
Turn on the events you need: User registered, User logged in, User logged out, Profile updated, Password reset, User role changed, and User deleted.
WooCommerce events
Cart item added starts enabled. Turn on cart item removed, cart emptied, cart viewed, checkout reached, order created, order completed, and order refunded as you need them. Cart abandoned and checkout abandoned follow logged-in shoppers. Choose a delay of 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, 8 hours, or 24 hours. The default is 1 hour. Placing an order cancels the pending abandonment job. See WooCommerce Intercom sync.
Custom attributes
Map WordPress and WooCommerce fields into Intercom attributes. Guide: Custom attributes.
Enable the Chat Widget if you want Messenger on-site. Turn on identity verification in settings so logged-in users are proven in chat. Details: IDV on WordPress.
- Update a test WordPress user; confirm the Intercom contact.
- With Woo enabled: place a staging order; confirm the event.
- If something stalls, check the plugin’s sync status.
Guest path: guest checkout creates a lead; registration merges. See the guest checkout guide.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Check |
|---|---|
| Connection rejected | Permissions, copy-paste; for the token path, correct workspace/app ID |
| Users not appearing | Role filters, User Sync settings, plugin sync status |
| Duplicate contacts | Email identity; guest→register merge path |
| Sync feels stuck | Bulk sync runs in small batches you can stop, with progress in the background |
| Woo events missing | Confirm Woo event toggles under Events, and that store sync is enabled |
