What people mean by “Shopify work with Square”
The same question hides four different jobs. Answer the wrong one and you buy the wrong tool.
Dual systems
You keep Square for in-person selling and Shopify for the online store. That answers both “does Shopify work with Square” and “does Square work with Shopify.” You sync the records both sides need: items, on-hand counts per location, and customers.
You do not shut down Square. You do not rebuild the floor on a new POS. You stop typing the same price, the same photo, and the same email into two admins.
Payments and Reader
Merchants also ask whether Shopify checkout can take Square, or whether Square Reader can ring up a Shopify cart. SquareFloww does not process payments and does not put Reader on Shopify checkout. In-person payments stay on Square. Online payments stay on whatever gateway you already use in Shopify.
If a vendor promises “Shopify works with Square” and only means a card reader, they are not talking about catalog or stock.
Migrate away from Square Online
Shopify’s own help often covers leaving Square Online and importing a catalog into Shopify once. That can be the right project if you are shutting Square’s website down. It is not the same as keeping Square POS open every day next to a Shopify store.

Pick one POS
Shopify POS versus Square is a real choice if you want a single vendor on the floor. If your floor team is trained on Square hardware, you can leave that hardware in place and still sell online on Shopify.
How Shopify and Square stay in step
Shopify is the ecommerce system. It owns the online storefront, the theme, and the apps you use for the website.
Square is the in-person system. It owns the register, the locations where you sell face to face, and the staff who already know that screen.
A sync app sits between them. SquareFloww’s job is products, inventory by location pair, and customers. You choose the store your team edits, and product and stock updates copy from that store to the other one. You map location pairs so the stock in “Downtown” on Shopify is the stock in “Downtown” on Square, not a single bucket for the whole company.

How to get started
Keep Square POS in place. This is ongoing sync, not a one-time import.
- Install SquareFloww from the Shopify App Store and approve access to your store.
- Connect the Square account that runs your locations.
- Map each Shopify location to the matching Square location.
- Set the source of truth to Shopify or Square.
- Link products by SKU or title, then run the first sync. On Starter you start that sync yourself. On Growth and Pro you can turn automatic sync on once the map looks right.

When you might not need both
If you never sell in person, Square POS may be extra weight. A Shopify-only store does not need a location pair.
If your whole business already lives inside Square, including the website, a sync into Shopify is a new channel, not a repair. Only add Shopify if you want that storefront and its app ecosystem.
If leadership has decided on one POS vendor, finish that decision first. Syncing two catalogs you plan to shut down next month is wasted setup. The keep-both case is for teams who expect Square on the floor and Shopify online to both still be here next quarter.
