Membership and LMS sites need Intercom contacts tagged with plan, role, and status, plus the learning or membership events that matter. Messaging then matches access level. Sync Engine for Intercom syncs WordPress user context, membership-related events, and custom attribute mapping.
This page is about Intercom sync, not choosing an LMS.
Common stacks include LearnDash, MemberPress, LifterLMS, Easy Digital Downloads, and similar membership or LMS plugins. Event depth depends on what you enable under Events (WP / Woo / Plugins).
WordPress Intercom integration
The support problem on membership sites
- “Why can’t I access module 3?” with no plan data in Intercom
- Churn messages aimed at active VIPs
- Manual retag after every membership upgrade
- Course progress invisible to the person answering chat
Intercom should know the member’s plan and status, not just their email.
What to sync
- WP roles / membership status as tags or attributes
- Signup / cancellation / renewal-style membership events
- Custom field mapping for plan meta, access flags, and dates
- Optional Woo + membership stacks (enable Woo events when the store is in play)
- Attribute enrichment: custom attributes guide
Example stacks
01MemberPress + Intercom
Put the plan name and status on the contact so support can see why a member cannot open a lesson.
02LearnDash or LifterLMS
Send course progress and completion into Intercom when those events are turned on, so chat is not guessing which lesson they are on.
03Membership + Woo Subscriptions
Turn on store events and subscription events together. Renewal, pause, and cancel then show on the same contact as the membership role.
Open Events in the plugin and confirm the events for your membership or LMS plugin are actually listed before you tell anyone they all sync.
Setup path
Connect with OAuth or an Access Token.
Map roles and attributes. Enable tag automation so old role tags clear when roles change.
Enable membership events as they appear under Events.
Build Intercom segments on those attributes: active, past due, cancelled, course complete, or whatever your data supports.
Plan details live on the WordPress Intercom plans page.
What this page will not do
- Rank for “best LMS”
- Replace LearnDash/MemberPress documentation
- Teach course design
